Overview

CVC words are short words that consist of a vowel connecting two consonants, like bed or vet. These short, three-letter CVC words are the first that children learn to read or decode, but longer CVC words do exist: tell is also a CVC word because the ll acts as one consonant sound.

Download our CVC e Bubble Bath activity and CVC e Words list below.

The CVC e Bubble Bath activity introduces children to CVC words, focusing on one connecting vowel. Talk through the different beginning and ending consonants, and what sound they make in front of or after the letter e. How many words can you make that have the letter e in the middle? Can you write down three words by picking one beginning consonant and one end consonant for each?

The CVC e Words list is an extensive source of short CVC words, grouping them together by ending. The list can be printed out and kept as a reference.

Deep Dive

Read our report on the Science of Reading. Research-based reading instruction must incorporate the 5 pillars of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This report provides an easy to understand overview of each of these pillars and explains the important connection between how the brain learns to read (the Neuroscience of Reading) and how we teach children to read (The Science of Reading Instruction). It also explains why helping children build connections between letters and sounds, through phonics and phonemic awareness, is so crucial for the developing reading mind. This report is perfect for sharing with colleagues and friends!
